Long Distance Family Relationship👆

Whenever we think of long distance relationships, or LDR’s, we think of two lovebirds trying to maintain their relationship from afar, but lovers aren’t the only ones who have to navigate long distance relations. In today’s climate, almost all of us can relate to maintaining LDR’s, yet we never think about them that way, our own families. Keeping in touch can be difficult, especially when you’re navigating time differences, different work schedules, shuffling kids, and routines. However, with technology and some ingenuity it can be done!

Here are some great and easy ways to help stay in touch with family members even if you’re miles apart.

1.) Give Thanks to Technology

Thanks to technology it’s much easier to stay in touch with family that live far away. Skype, FaceTime, email, and social media make it easier to stay in touch, and to get a little peek into family member’s life. We can’t say it enough, but take full advantage of technology! Most of us may only use phone calls and completely underestimate the power of emails, or even social media. We also understand that not everybody is tech savvy or knows how to use every form of technology, and we don’t want you to force it.

2.) Scheduling Time to Speak

Skype or FaceTime are practically useless if you still can’t find the time to speak to your family. That’s why it’s important to schedule a time that works best for all of your schedules. If you can schedule a once a week Skype or phone call you’ll be able to stay up to date on everything that is happening. Once a week conversations also make it easy for you to keep phone calls short since you won’t have to fill everyone in on weeks of information. This is particularly helpful when you’re considering time differences.

3.) Social Media

Social media is a great way to send messages and talk to family members via chat and now even video calls, but have you ever thought about creating a private Facebook or Instagram account just for family members? This way all of your family members can share pictures, updates, and even events with other family members who they might otherwise not stay in touch with. It’s also a great way to post throwback pictures from back in the day, and educate younger family members about family history.

4.) Email

Emails can be used for this purpose as well. Family members can take turns creating a weekly news letter about family updates, throw in some throwback pictures, or even congratulate someone for their birthday, graduation, or engagement. This way everyone in the family can stay in the loop.

Staying in touch with long distance family doesn’t have to be hard!
